Salman Khan, one of the hottest stars of Bollywood today, has been charming his fans since 1989. He debuted in the Hindi film industry, as a leading star, with the movie ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. The film was a major hit and since its release, Salman has been climbing the ladder of success. Today, he is counted amongst the top stars of Bollywood, comparable to the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan. In the course of his career till date, he has been a part of the highest earning films of five distinct years.

Childhood and Early Life

Salman Khan was born as ‘Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan’ on 27th December 1965, in Indore, Salman KhanMadhya Pradesh. He is the son of Salim Khan, a scriptwriter who gave hit films like Sholay and Don, and his first wife, Salma Khan. He was one of the five children of his parents, the other being two sons, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, and two daughters, Alvira and Arpita. In the late-1980s, Salman Khan started visiting producers and auditioning for roles. He debuted in the film industry, in a supporting role, in 1988, with the movie ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’.

Career

Salman Khan’s debut as a leading actor came with Sooraj R. Barjatya's ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, which was released in 1989. The movie went on to become one of the most successful films of that time and also got him Filmfare Best Male Debut Award, apart from a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award. In 1990, he was seen in ‘Baaghi’, with South Indian actress Nagma, which turned out to be another major hit. The following year, Salman Khan starred in a number of films, including ‘Patthar Ke Phool’, ‘Sanam Bewafa’ and ‘Saajan’.

The movie ‘Saajan’ established him as an actor who could perform some serious roles too and helped him move away from the ‘romantic guy’ image. However, the initial success could not guarantee future hits and almost all his 1992-1993 releases turned out to be flops. It was in 1994 that Salman Khan became the king of box office once again, when Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ hit the theaters. The movie turned out to be one of the highest grossers of all times and also won him his second nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award.

Salman Khan WallpaperThe same year, Salman Khan was seen in ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, ‘Sangdil Sanam’ and ‘Chaand Kaa Tukdaa’. None of them were box-office hits, but the first one did establish his talent in the field of comedy. In 1995 came Rakesh Roshan's ‘Karan Arjun’, in which he co-starred with Shahrukh Khan. The film went on to become the second biggest hit of the year and Salman Khan bagged a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award. With the arrival of 1996 came Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’ and Raj Kanwar's ‘Jeet’.

While the first movie received tremendous critically acclaim, the second one made excellent business at the box office. ‘Judwaa’ and ‘Auzaar’ were Salman Khan’s releases in the year 1997, with the former being quite a success. In 1998, he starred in the comedy ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’, which was one of the biggest commercial successes of that year. The same year, he was also seen in the moderately successful ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’. Then came Karan Johar's directorial debut, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’.

In ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, Salman Khan played a supporting role and ended up receiving his second Filmfare Award, this time under the Best Supporting Actor category. The year 1999 saw him in films like ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’, ‘Biwi No.1’ and ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. While the first was moderately successful, the other two went on to become major box-office hits. With ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, he got another Best Actor nomination at Filmfare. Salman Khan was seen in around six films in the year 2000.

Of these, two - ‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega’ and ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ did average business, while the rest were failures. ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’, his much-delayed film with Madhuri and Shahrukh, was released in 2002, but barely managed to earn its worth. Success continued to evade Salman Khan till 2003, when ‘Tere Naam’ was released. Not only was the movie a major hit, but it also earned him great comments from the critics. The same year, he was seen in ‘Baghban’, which got him nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and No Entry (2005) were his other hit films. The year 2006 was rather unlucky for Salman Khan, as his films failed to do well at the box office. Even his first 2007 release ‘Salaam E Ishq’ did not manage to charm the audience. However, with the success of ‘Partner’ (2007), he again came back in the top league. His first Hollywood movie, Marigold: An Adventure in India’, was a commercial as well as critical failure. In 2008, Salman Khan entered the small screen, with the game show, ‘Dus Ka Dum’.

Personal Life

Since the past many years, Salman Khan has been known for his amazing body. He is one of the first actors who realized the importance of bodybuilding and having six-pack abs. In 2004, People magazine of U.S. voted him as the 7th best-looking man in the World and the best looking man in India. He has had relationships with a number of females in the past, which include Sangeeta Bijlani, Somy Ali and Aishwarya Rai. Touted to be the ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’ of Bollywood, he has been dating model-turned-actress Katrina Kaif since 2003.

Despite his tough guy and angry young man image, Salman Khan has always been the favorite of the audience. Behind his tough stance is a sensitive heart that constantly indulges in charities and loves to bring a smile on people’s face. In October 2007, he accepted an offer to have his wax replica in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London. The life-size wax statue was installed there in January 2008. Salman Khan is the step-son of the yesteryears diva Helen and has Malaika Arora Khan as his sister-in-law (Arbaaz’s wife) and Atul Agnihotri as his brother-in-law (Alvira’s husband).

Controversies

Throughout his career, Salman Khan has been involved in several controversies. In September 2002, he was arrested for rash and negligent driving. This was when his car rammed into a Mumbai bakery, killing one person and injuring three. Though the charge of culpable homicide was later dropped, he is still in trial for lesser charges related to the accident. In 2006, he was convicted for hunting the endangered ‘Chinkara’, during the shoot of film ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’. Later, he was granted bail by the police. His affair as well as break-up with Aishwarya was much publicized and she also accused him of harassing her.
